Arter: What It Actually Is
Arter is one of Istanbul's leading contemporary art institutions, run by the Vehbi Koç Foundation since 2010. It moved in 2019 to a striking purpose-built home in Dolapdere, a formerly industrial district just north of Beyoğlu, designed by the architecture firm Grimshaw.
The museum focuses on contemporary art — exhibitions, performances, talks, and workshops — and has supported the production of well over 200 artworks by Turkish and international artists since it opened. It has also hosted editions of the Istanbul Biennial and Design Biennial.
Because it's a short walk (or metro ride) from Taksim and İstiklal Street, Arter is easy to combine with a wider Beyoğlu day, even though Dolapdere itself is still a quieter, less touristy part of the city.

What There Is to See
The Building Itself
Designed by Grimshaw Architects and opened in 2019, the building is itself a notable piece of contemporary architecture worth seeing beyond the art inside.
Rotating Contemporary Exhibitions
Arter's program changes regularly, featuring both established and emerging Turkish and international contemporary artists across multiple floors.
Performances & Talks
Beyond visual art, Arter regularly hosts performances, artist talks, and workshops, making it more of a cultural venue than a static museum.
The Dolapdere Neighborhood
The surrounding area has quietly become a small gallery district in its own right, with a few smaller art spaces worth a look nearby.
