How to Cancel Your Turkish Residence Permit When You Leave

How to Cancel Your Turkish Residence Permit When You Leave

A step people often skip, and shouldn't.

If you're leaving Turkey permanently before your residence permit naturally expires, formally canceling it protects you from complications on a future visit or application.

Step 1: Understand why cancellation matters

An uncancelled residence permit that later expires unused can create confusion in official records — particularly if you plan to apply for a different permit type or return to Turkey later. A clean, formally closed record is simpler to work with than an ambiguous one.

Step 2: Notify the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management

Visit or contact your provincial Il Goc Idaresi Mudurlugu — the same office that issued your permit — to inform them you're departing permanently and want to formally close out your residence status. You can also find general information through the Directorate General of Migration Management.

Step 3: Settle any outstanding obligations first

  • Cancel or transfer your rental contract properly, with your landlord aware of your departure date
  • Close out or formally pause your SGK enrollment if you were registered
  • Cancel your Turkish phone plan or convert it to prepaid if you're keeping the number
  • Settle any outstanding utility bills tied to your address

Step 4: Update your UETS registration status if applicable

If you registered for UETS (the electronic notification system, mandatory after your first permit) through PTT, make sure your departure is properly reflected there too, since it's tied to your official address and contact records.

Step 5: Keep copies of everything

Keep your cancellation confirmation, along with copies of your original permit and any renewal documents, in case you need to reference your Turkish residence history for a future visa application anywhere. See our common bureaucracy mistakes guide for more on why documentation habits like this matter.
