Moving to Turkey From the USA
How US citizens can move to Turkey — e-Visa entry, the residence permit process, and early banking setup.
US citizens can enter Turkey via e-Visa, applied for online before travel — one of the more straightforward entry processes available. This covers tourism and initial stays; it does not cover paid work or stays beyond the visa's permitted window.
For a longer stay, the same short-term residence permit (ikamet) process applies regardless of nationality: proof of address (rental contract or property deed), health insurance, and proof of sufficient funds, filed through Turkey's Directorate of Migration Management.
One US-specific practical note: US bank cards and transfers work for the initial move, but opening a Turkish bank account early makes the residence permit's proof-of-funds step and ongoing rent payments noticeably smoother — the same advice that applies to most Western nationalities moving here.
