Turkey e-Visa Online: The Actual Step-by-Step Application Process

A real walkthrough of applying for Turkey's e-Visa online — what the official site actually looks like, what to enter, and how to avoid overpaying.

If your nationality qualifies for Turkey's e-Visa system, this is genuinely one of the simpler visa processes you'll encounter — but a surprising number of applicants still overpay or apply through the wrong site.

Step 1: Confirm you're on the official site

Before entering any information, verify you're on [Turkey's official e-Visa government portal](https://www.evisa.gov.tr/), not a third-party lookalike site. This single step avoids the most common problem applicants run into: paying two or three times the actual fee to a site that just forwards your application.

Step 2: Check your eligibility

Enter your nationality and passport type to confirm you actually qualify for the e-Visa route rather than needing a sticker visa through VFS. Not every nationality qualifies, and some require holding a valid visa from another specific country (like the US, UK, or Schengen area) to be eligible — see our guide for Indians with a US visa if that applies to you.

Step 3: Fill in your application form

You'll typically need:

  • Passport number and expiry date
  • Full name as it appears on your passport
  • Nationality and date of birth
  • Planned arrival date
  • Email address for your approval to be sent to

Step 4: Pay the official fee

The fee is fixed by your nationality. Pay directly through the official portal's secure payment system — this is the point where third-party sites most commonly inflate the price.

Step 5: Receive and save your approval

Approval is often issued quickly, but processing time isn't guaranteed to be instant. Once approved, download and save your e-Visa as a PDF, and keep both a digital and printed copy for travel — airlines and border officials sometimes ask to see it before boarding or at entry.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

  • Entering your name differently than it appears on your passport
  • Applying at the very last minute rather than with a buffer
  • Losing the confirmation email and not having a saved copy of the actual e-Visa document
  • Assuming the e-Visa alone guarantees entry — border officials retain final discretion even with an approved e-Visa

What the e-Visa doesn't cover

An approved e-Visa is for tourism or business visits within its stated validity and stay-length limits. It doesn't authorize employment in Turkey, and it isn't the same as a residence permit — if you're planning to stay longer than the e-Visa allows, that's a separate process entirely, started after you arrive through the Directorate General of Migration Management.
