Getting to & Around Canakkale

Getting to & Around Canakkale

Canakkale is roughly a 5-hour drive from Istanbul, or a shorter combination of bus and ferry crossing the Dardanelles strait.

The city has its own small airport with limited domestic flights, though most visitors arrive overland given Canakkale's role as a stop on the route toward the Aegean coast and Gallipoli/Troy specifically.

Within Canakkale, the city center and waterfront are walkable, but visiting Troy or the Gallipoli battlefields requires a car, organized tour, or taxi, since both sites sit outside the immediate city area.

Many visitors combine Canakkale with onward travel toward Izmir or the Aegean coast, making it a practical stop on a broader western Turkey route rather than a standalone destination.
