Şerefiye Sarnıcı (Theodosius Cistern): What It Actually Is

Şerefiye Sarnıcı — also known as the Cistern of Theodosius — is a 5th-century Byzantine underground water reservoir in Sultanahmet, a short walk from Hagia Sophia. It's smaller and far less crowded than the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı), which makes it a good pick if you want the same atmosphere without the queues.

The cistern was rediscovered in the 1980s and restored for public visits in 2018. Inside, 32 marble columns nine meters tall support the vaulted ceiling, and the space is used both as a historic site and occasionally as a small event and exhibition venue.

Because it's less known than its larger neighbor, Şerefiye tends to be a quieter, more contemplative visit — walkways let you get close to the columns without the crowds of Yerebatan Sarnıcı.

Before You Go

A quick, easy add-on if you're already sightseeing in Sultanahmet:

  • Combine it with Yerebatan Sarnıcı and Hagia Sophia since all three are within a few minutes' walk of each other
  • Buy tickets on-site or online — it's rarely sold out given lower visitor numbers
  • Wear shoes with grip, as with any underground cistern the walkways can be slightly damp
  • Budget only 20–30 minutes here, making it easy to fit into a packed sightseeing day
  • Check the cistern's current exhibition schedule — the space sometimes hosts art installations alongside the historic display

What There Is to See

The Column Hall

32 marble columns arranged in 8 rows of 4, each 9 meters tall, supporting a brick vaulted ceiling lit to highlight the Byzantine engineering.

The Walkways

Elevated platforms let you walk close to the columns for a more intimate view than the wider, more crowded Basilica Cistern offers.

The Quiet Factor

Because it's less visited than Yerebatan Sarnıcı, Şerefiye is one of the calmer underground sites in Sultanahmet — a good stop if the crowds elsewhere are wearing you down.

Rotating Exhibitions

The cistern occasionally hosts small art and cultural exhibitions alongside its permanent historical displays, worth checking before you go.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Confusing It With Yerebatan Sarnıcı

Mixing up Şerefiye Sarnıcı with the larger Basilica Cistern

Solution

They're two separate sites a short walk apart. Şerefiye is smaller with 32 columns; Yerebatan Sarnıcı is larger with 336 columns and the famous Medusa heads. Both are worth visiting if you have time.

Expecting Museum Pass Coverage

Assuming Museum Pass Istanbul covers entry here too

Solution

It doesn't — Şerefiye Sarnıcı is ticketed separately from the Museum Pass network.

Skipping It Entirely

Not knowing it exists and only visiting Yerebatan Sarnıcı

Solution

Because it's overshadowed by its larger neighbor, many visitors miss Şerefiye entirely — it's a quick, worthwhile add-on if you're already in the area.
