The two real options, compared.
Option 1: Prepaid — fastest to set up, best for short stays
- Buy at any carrier kiosk (Turkcell, Vodafone, Turk Telekom) with just your passport
- Active within about 15 minutes
- No contract, no credit check, no Turkish tax number required
- Top up data and minutes as needed through the carrier's app or at any kiosk
Option 2: Postpaid — better value for longer stays, needs more setup
- Generally requires a Turkish residence permit and tax number to sign up
- Better monthly data/minute value than prepaid over time
- Contract terms typically run 12 or 24 months — confirm the exact commitment before signing
- Requires a visit to a carrier's physical store, not just a kiosk
Step 1: Know the foreign-phone IMEI registration rule
If you're using a phone purchased outside Turkey with a Turkish SIM long-term, Turkish regulations require IMEI registration after a certain period, or the device can be blocked from Turkish networks. This is a genuine, commonly overlooked issue for long-stay foreigners bringing their own phone. Confirm the current registration process and fee directly with a carrier store if you're staying long-term with a foreign-purchased device.
Step 2: Decide based on your actual stay length
- Under 3 months: prepaid, no question — the setup speed and lack of commitment outweighs any per-GB cost difference
- 3+ months, uncertain final duration: prepaid initially, switch to postpaid once you're confident in your timeline
- Confirmed long-term stay with residence permit in hand: postpaid generally offers better ongoing value
