This is the single most important first document you'll get in Turkiye — nearly everything else (bank account, residence permit, phone contract, utilities) requires it. It's free, fast, and doesn't require a residence permit or even being in the country.
Option 1: Online — fastest, can be done before you arrive
- Go directly to the Interactive Tax Office (ivd.gib.gov.tr)
- Select "Potential Tax Number Application for Foreigners"
- Enter your passport details exactly as they appear on your passport, plus a scanned passport photo
- Submit — the number is typically issued instantly as a downloadable PDF
Option 2: In person — if you want it confirmed face-to-face
Walk into any local tax office (Vergi Dairesi) with your original passport and a photocopy. No appointment needed at most offices. The number is usually issued on the spot, taking 15-20 minutes once you reach the counter.
What you need either way
- Passport (original for in-person; scanned copy for online)
- That's genuinely it — no proof of address, no residence permit, no minimum stay required
Cost: Free, both routes.
*The number is permanent — issued once, valid for life, and doesn't change even if your visa or residence status changes later.*
If the online system won't validate your details (occasionally happens with certain passport formats), your fallback is simply to visit a tax office in person instead — resolved the same day. Once you have this, you're ready for the next steps: opening a bank account or setting up a business.
