How to Get Permanent Residency in Turkey

The real 8-year path to permanent (long-term) residency in Turkey, including the student-permit half-year rule and income requirements.

Turkey's long-term (permanent) residence permit requires 8 years of continuous legal residence, with no single absence abroad exceeding 6 consecutive months. Not every permit type counts fully — student residence permits only count as half-years, so a student-only path takes longer than 8 calendar years in practice.

Other requirements: proof of sufficient income (assessed against current minimum wage), valid health insurance, no receipt of state social assistance in the last 3 years, and a clean legal record. Processing typically takes 2-4 months once you formally apply.

Once granted, the long-term permit has no expiration date and no annual renewal — the closest status to citizenship without actually holding a Turkish passport. Standard naturalization to full citizenship, separately, requires 5 years of continuous legal residence plus Turkish language proficiency and financial self-sufficiency.
