Istanbulkart and Public Transport in Istanbul: The Complete Guide
Everything foreigners need to know about Istanbulkart and Istanbul's public transport system — where to buy it, what it covers, and how to top up.
One card, the whole city.
Step 1: Buy an Istanbulkart on arrival
Istanbulkart is the single card covering metro, tram, ferry, Metrobus, Marmaray (the cross-Bosphorus rail line), and most buses. Buy one from a vending machine at any metro or ferry station, including at the airport itself, and top it up with cash or card.
Step 2: Understand the fare structure
Fares are distance and mode-based rather than a flat rate, but transfers between different transport modes within a set time window are discounted — meaning a metro-to-ferry-to-bus trip costs less than paying for each leg separately from scratch.
Step 3: Know the four core transport modes
- Metro — fastest for longer distances, extensive and growing network
- Tram — useful specifically for the historic peninsula (Sultanahmet, Eminonu) where metro coverage is limited
- Ferry — the most scenic and often fastest way to cross between the European and Asian sides, especially during traffic hours
- Bus and Metrobus — fills gaps the rail network doesn't reach; Metrobus specifically runs on a dedicated lane and can be faster than a taxi during rush hour
Step 4: Top up easily as you go
Top-up machines are at every station. Mobile apps also allow digital top-ups linked to a physical card, useful if you're commuting regularly and don't want to carry cash.
Step 5: Use it for more than just transport
Istanbulkart is also accepted for some public toilets and select vending machines around the city — a small but genuinely convenient detail once you're used to carrying it everywhere.
